Born January 5th, in Dallas, Tx, Larry Joe McGilvery Sr. (aka Jody), was the 5th of 9 children born to the parentage of Pastor John and District Missionary Inna B. McGilvery.
Attending DISD schools throughout his educational experiences, he attended J.N.Ervin ES and later became a proud alumnus of South Oak Cliff High, graduating in the class of 1974.
Larry answered the call of our United States during the Viet Nam war, and enlisted in the US Army, where he served and was Honorably discharged.
After working in different types of employment, Larry's desire to his own business, as his father accomplished before, (McGilvery's Construction), and this gave birth to his lawn service, Jody's Lawn Service, where today his son Jacoby continues to serve their many customers.
After being born and raised in the Lighthouse Church of God In Christ, under the pastorage of Supt. Edward Calloway, and later moving with his parents to the Greater Prayer Tower COGIC, under his uncle and Pastor Earnest McGilvery.
Larry served later with his father's church, the Pleasant Grove Academy COGIC until this father's death, and continued as a faithful member/deacon for over 20 years until his death, under the leadership of his brother, Pastor Ricky C. McGilvery.
Proceeded in death by his parents John and Inna McGilvery, and granddaughter Gabrielle Gillian, Mothe-in-love Helen Choice, and sister-in-love Debra Choice.
Larry Joe McGilvery passed away in peace on May 5th, surrounded by his loving family.
He survived by his wife of over 42 years, Sherry Choice McGilvery, and a loving father to 3 daughters, Nina Harvey, Vonedra Choice, Marylin Miller (Bruce); 4 sons Larry J. McGilvery of Tacoma, WA., Larry Joe McGilvery Jr. of Dallas, Jonathan McGilvery (Alyssa), and Jacoby
McGilvery (Romika). Also loved and cherished by his siblings: Sanetta Robinson (Jimmy),
Lenda Jones, Tony McGilvery (Wendy), Ricky McGilvery (La'Keisha), Billy McGilvery of San Diego CA., Sabrina Russell (James), and John McGilvery (Yolanda) of Germantown, Maryland, and an adopted sister; Mother Ola Johnson, with a host of 13 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and many friends throughout his life's journey.
