Melvin James Simpson, Jr. (Little Mel) "I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us." – Romans 8:18 Melvin James Simpson, Jr., age 47, body was discovered on May 16, 2022, in Coffeyville, Ks. He was a victim of a homicide. He was born on May 17, 1974, in Independence, Kansas at Mercy Hospital. He is the oldest son of five children born to Melvin James Simpson Sr. and Sandra K. (Hadley) Simpson. For a long time, Mel Jr., was the only boy, with his 3 sisters and he wanted a brother. He prayed and told us that God said he was going to have his little brother. His Grandma Clara told him, "Mel, it might be a girl" so he wouldn't be disappointed. Mel held on to his faith and said and, "Oh no, God told me Mama is having my little Brother" and it was a boy and he was so happy. Melvin was smart, handsome, and funny, always the life of the party. His siblings have a lot of stories to tell. He loved his family and friends. Mel Jr. grew up in Independence, Kansas and received his education there, graduating from Independence High School. Immediately after High School, he attended Fort Scott Community College, Emporia State University, Pittsburg State University and North Texas University. While in high school, Melvin was very active, he played and lettered in football, basketball and track receiving many metals and trophies. He also took-up boxing and Karate. Like his nephew Tyler, was a singer and was in choir, band PUPP's (Peers understanding Peer Pressure) and the Indy Ensemble. During the summer, along with his other siblings, he was active with the city recreation activities. Mel Jr. excelled at T-Ball, and Babe Ruth and has many trophies, most of the time being coached by his Dad. Mel Jr. truly was a natural. Melvin was raised in a Christian home and was a Bible Scholar. He was called to preach at an early age and brought his first message at around 8 years. God gifted Melvin with many talents and gave him revelation and knowledge. He sang solos and with the Simpson 5, He played the Baritone, Tuba and could play some piano by ear. He was an artist and could draw anything. Melvin took a wrong path and battled for years with an addiction. He served time in prison and while there he became a paralegal and used his skills to help other inmates. After leaving prison, he continued to help others. Melvin Jr. was a visionary and laid all the plans out for his vision. He had plans to open a non-profit organization called "2nd Chance Ministries" and he also wanted to have a mobile Barber shop. He always said he experienced so much in his life and made so many mistakes, all he wanted to do was give back by helping others. Mel Jr. had a heart of gold and was always humble enough to say I am sorry, please forgive me. He even wrote a public apology and God heard him. Melvin was smart, handsome, and funny always the life of the party. His siblings have a lot of stories to tell. He loved his family and friends. Mel Jr. worked many different types of jobs, Juvenile Center in Olathe, Ks, Southern Star pipeline for the summer, Standard Motors, Acme Foundry and Spears. He was unemployed at the time of his death. Melvin is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Walter Simpson and Clara Reed; his maternal grandparents, Buddy and Virgie Hadley; his nephew Tyler James Collins, and many other relatives. Melvin leaves to cherish his memories, his son, Devin of Parsons, Ks, his parents, Supt. Melvin J. Simpson, Sr. and Sandra K. Simpson of Coffeyville, 3 sisters, Dennina Shontel (Simpson) Collins of Coffeyville, Ks., TaNisha Nicole Simpson of Lewisville, Texas, Erica Charlene (Simpson) Dennis (Warren) of Broken Arrow, Ok. and one brother, Jason Henry Simpson (Jennifer) of Irving, Texas. 4 nephews, 6 Nieces, 4 great-nephews and 4 great-nieces and a host of other relatives and friends.
