Supt. Jimmy R. Smith was born June 4, 1941 to the parentage of D.B. "Jim Bo" Smith and Lena Mae Jones Smith in Gilmer, TX. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1961. He attended college at Northeast Texas Community College. He met, fell in love and married Missy Helen Larie Smith on June 17, 1962. To this union, four children were born. Supt. Smith received the Lord into his life as a teenager. He was a member of the First Church of God in Christ in Mount Pleasant. His pastors were the late Eld. J.L. Lyons and the late Supt. W.B. Bookman. Supt. Smith was appointed as a deacon at First Church of God in Christ April 26, 1964. He "bootleg" preached until he was certified as a minister on June 20, 1969. Supt. Smith was appointed to pastor at Ore City Church of God in Christ on July 16, 1971. He received a certificate of ordination on July 17, 1972. He went on to pastor at Wilkerson Temple COGIC in Naples beginning Aug. 24, 1975. He was additionally charged to pastor at Faith Tabernacle COGIC in Pittsburg beginning July 21, 1991. Supt. Smith continued to preach, minister and encourage others until his death on July 2, 2022. Supt. Smith, who retired from Dekoron Wire and Cable LLC/Manufacturing in 2004, was an excellent provider and learned early how to manage his finances well. Supt. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one daughter, Angela, grandson Brandon "Hawk" Hawkins and six siblings and three sisters-in law: J.D. (Joyce) Smith, H.B. (Bennie C.) Smith, Elloyd (Beaula) Smith, Jessie Lewis Smith, Joe Melvin Smith and Bob Cosby Smith. Supt. Smith leaves to mourn three children: Pastor Jimmy W. (Estelle) Smith, Sr. of Mount Pleasant, TX; Dr. Cassandra Smith Woods of Lewisville, TX and Ray D. (Resar) Smith of Red Oak, TX.; grandchildren: Shakia Smith, Minister Jimmy W. (Angela) Smith, Jr., Courtney Grant, DeSondra Smith and Trey L. Woods and great grandchildren: Ja'cori Smith Tillman and Jimmy W. Smith, III. He also survived by a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
